WISSOTA Champ taking the next big step
Prepared by Todd Turner Dirt on Dirt

The gulf between upper-Midwest WISSOTA Late Model racing and national touring Late Model racing has been a wide one, but it's been a fruitful pipeline that has included Hall of Famer Rick Aukland of Fargo, N.D., Jimmy Mars of Menomonie, Wis., Brady Smith of Solon Springs, Wis., and, most recently, Terry Casey of New London, Wis.

Zach Johnson of Kensington, Minn., the 2007-08 WISSOTA weekly points champion, hopes to be the next to make the move in 2009. Johnson, a 23-race winner last season, has added an open-competition engine to his No. 73 and has already made progress with a feature start at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway's March Madness and his first career World of Outlaws Late Model Series start April 4 at Farmer City Raceway's Illini 100. Johnson Racing Starts Season in Kentucky!

Zach Johnson and the #73 team opened their season last week by traveling to the Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway for their annual "March Madness" double header!  After a good qualifying run on Friday night, the #73 machine started heat race action 3rd on the grid.  Zach was able to bring in a 4th place effort in his heat race which earned him the 15th starting position for the feature.  After a competitive 30 lap feature, the team earned themselves a 19th place finish and gained some valuable experience!!  Night number two they were not as fortunate.  Qualifying did not go well, and the team started near the tail end of their heat race, bringing in a 10th place finish.  Zach was able to move up to 6th in his consolation heat, but needed a 4th place or better to gain a spot in the $7,500-to-win main event.  Overall it was a good start to the 2009 season and a great open motor debut for the team!  Next up for Johnson Racing is the World of Outlaws "Illini 100" at the Farmer City Raceway in Farmer City Illinois.

Johnson defends WISSOTA Late Model National Title

By Ray Beste - Kensington, Mn (October 28th, 2008)
In only his second full year behind the wheel of a Dirt Late Model, Kensington, Mn driver Zach Johnson successfully defended his WISSOTA Late Model National crown. Johnson joined Pete Parker, David Karst and Mitch Johnson as the only back to back champions in WISSOTA's 24 year history of sanctioning Late Models. Although 2007 garnered Johnson the national title, 2008 proved to be an even more fruitful year. The success started early and did not stop until the final event of the year.
